Spotlight: Human Factors for Simulation Technicians

Simulation technicians play a vital role in delivering safe, effective simulation, yet dedicated human factors training for technical staff has been limited.

Human Factors for Simulation Technicians was created to address this gap, providing a course designed specifically for those working behind the scenes in simulation. The programme combines an engaging human factors session with an immersive Last Light experience before placing participants at the centre of three realistic control room simulations, where they become the simulation technician responsible for managing the session under pressure.

The scenarios explore communication, workload management, situational awareness, decision-making and teamwork, reflecting the real challenges technicians face during simulation delivery. By making the technician the participant, the course provides a unique opportunity to develop both technical and non-technical skills in a realistic environment.

Following positive feedback from attendees, work is now underway to develop an online version of the course. This will allow simulation technicians across the UK and beyond to access the training, ensuring more technical professionals have the opportunity to develop their human factors knowledge regardless of location.
