This year’s ASPIH was held in Edinburgh on the 3-5th November 2024. This year was the 15th anniversary of the conference, and the theme was transformative simulation.
“As we enter our 15th year as the Association for Simulation Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), we are moving into a new era where the focus of simulation practices in transforming patient and staff safety and experience is becoming the norm and not the exception. The application of simulation to explore systems thinking, identify and analyse problems, influence organisational behaviours, engage patients and stakeholders, and collectively develop new innovative care interventions, is gaining momentum and evidence. These ground-breaking applications of simulation can be considered to be Transformative Simulation as they aim to Innovate, Improve, Intervene, Involve, Identify, Include and Influence the delivery and experience of healthcare, and enhance the practice of teams in health and social care settings “
Colette Laws-Chapman, ASPiH President.
There was a fantastic turn out from North East Simulation Network members at this years event with colleagues from the DASH, STRIVE, NCIC, Northumbria and Teesside University all presenting excellent projects. The NHS England NENC Faculty of Patient Safety team were also presenting this year and our simulation tech North East champions were on hand to assist with components of the technician programme at the event.

The gala dinner provided a great opportunity for networking and celebrating the success of this year’s simulation achievements. The network would like to thank SCOTIA UK for the sponsorship that allowed simulation technicians from the network to attend this years event.
ASPiH supports several Specialist Interest Groups which will continue to provide education sessions throughout the year between conference.

This year ASPiH will celebrate its 15th anniversary. In recognition of this significant milestone the ASPiH Executive were keen to revisit the survey questions used as part of the first National Simulation Development Project. The initial project fell short of evidencing the impact that simulation activities had on improving patient outcomes and service delivery. The intention of the survey is to understand, appreciate and learn where, when and how simulation activities, technology enhanced learning and immersive environments are used across the United Kingdom and Ireland (and more widely). This survey is designed to identify and understand instances of best practice where simulation activities have been shown to improve healthcare education and/or clinical practice. Therefore, this survey utilises the original questions and some additional questions to report the impact and utility of simulation activities to determine how the simulation community has grown and evolved over the last 10 years. The next ASPiH conference will be held in Bournemouth in 2025.
