The Northeast & North Cumbria region hosted its first two Becoming Simulation Faculty (BSF) Workshops on the 9th and 10th of June this year. Dr Niall Mullen, was delighted to welcome the national leads, Prof Bryn Baxendale & Chris Gay, to the James Cook University Hospital and Northumbria University to deliver the workshops with our local faculty.
BSF is a national simulation faculty development programme that has been developed by NHS England Simulation and Immersive Technologies team and co-designed with simulation, education and human factors experts from the NHS and higher education sectors. This programme comprises a series of six eLearning topics and a linked face-to-face full day workshop. It aims to provide theoretical grounding and practical advice for colleagues in the education or healthcare practice setting who wish to engage and enhance how simulation in all forms can be used optimally for education, training and / or patient safety improvement. The programme is open to colleagues across all levels of experience from novice to advanced facilitators.
The first of the two workshops was held at the STRIVE Centre at the James Cook University Hospital on June 9th. This was a fantastic day packed with learning & discussion around all things simulation. It was expertly facilitated by the local course lead Dr Rajesh Lall who was ably assisted by Dr Sophie Wilcox. The feedback was excellent, and we look forward to future events being led and delivered by Dr Lall and team.
The second workshop was held at the Coach Lane Campus at Northumbria University on June 10th. As ever it was fantastically organised and facilitated by the local course lead, and regional simulation doyen, Professor Alan Platt with expert help from Carmelita Yadao and Teesside University’s Abigail Green. As with the first workshop the feedback was fantastic and a credit to all concerned.
The content of the BSF Workshops reflects the content of many of the currently delivered introduction to simulation programmes (preparation, design, debriefing, evaluation) as well as being adaptable to local contexts. The national team have obtained CPD accreditation for the programme and are developing it further with more advanced topics including Simulation Technicians, Extended Reality, Simulated Participants and Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS).
