Using Virtual AI Patients to Teach Communication Skills
Dr Chris Jefferies, Geeky Medics
Have you ever wondered how we could use AI to teach communication skills and how it can be integrated into simulation based learning? Join Chris Jefferies from Geeky Medics who will talk about the development of virtual patients, some of the challenges of using generative AI, and how this technology can be integrated into communication skills and simulation training. The workshop will be interactive, with participants trying out the virtual patients feature and potentially building their own virtual patients. Delegates will require their own device to be access the virtual patients.

“Embedding Delirium pathway into your services” Sharing our regional experience
Dr M Krishnan
Early Detection, Prevention and management of Delirium is vital in improving patient safety and reducing harm. There are Barriers in detection, diagnosis and used of non-pharmacological interventions in management of delirium. Delirium is everybody’s business and in this workshop we will help colleagues to embed delirium pathways and interprofessional learning.
In Dr Krishnan's workshop they will be sharing experience of how they developed a trust wide delirium pathway and embedded into our care. As one of the mental health trusts in the northeast they co-created a delirium pathway and will share their experiences and resources.
Becoming Simulation Faculty
Prof Bryn Baxendale
Chair: Dr Niall Mullen
The 'Becoming Simulation Faculty' project is intended to offer a national simulation faculty development programme that is relevant and accessible across the UK for educators, practitioners, technicians and managers who are at the beginning of their development pathway as simulation faculty.
This session will provide an update on how the programme is being designed and progress toward launching this as a large-scale pilot during 2024. Opportunities for the NESN to support this phase of work and plans for contributing to future inclusion of more advanced topics will be discussed.
Workshops
11:20 - 12:00 Breakout Session 1
ASPiH Standards Plenary
Collette Laws- Chapman
This session provides an opportunity to discuss the 2023 standards in more depth with the ASPiH president. The new standards were announced to ASPiH at the 2023 November Conference. This session is an opportunity for the North East Simulation community to have a Q&A regarding the implementation of these new standards which include increased recognition of simulation technicians as faculty.

Dr Lauren Dhugga, Dr Jenna Gilone, Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Maximum impact, minimum spend - gamification and novel problem solving at NuTH
Tom Hayes & Newcastle Hospitals
The aim of this session is to understand gamification, the benefits of utilising this concept and without the need to break the bank.
Beyond Boundaries: Exploring New Realms with VR360 Simulations for Patient Wellbeing
John Lewandowski, Craig Dores CDDFT
Follow a patient with a Post Partum Haemorrhage over three phases of a patient journey from the delivery room to corridor transit to theatre using 360 degree videos. In this workshop participants with see a truly multi-professional simulated learning experience involving midwives, anaesthetists, obstetricians and anaesthetic nurses. John and Craig will take workshop participants through the benefits. strategies and pitfalls and when to use 360 degree videos.
MELISSA
A Training Journey
Stephen Cooper
The aim of this session is to outline benefits and use-cases for using a mobile resource to deliver training across the North East and North Cumbria.
NCIC clinical skills team
Christopher Relph
Having delivered many clinical skills days across North Cumbria over a number of years, the team from NCIC will be presenting results and thoughts on reaching communities which are rural and sometimes difficult to reach onboard MELISSA.
High Acuity Low Occurrence skills day (HALO)
Dr Jonathan Laws
Dr Jonathan Laws will be presenting the HALO skills day in which the MELISSA bus was used to facilitate simulation sessions. The team made full use of the C celia c-section trainer, advanced nursing Anne simulator and more.
